Al igual que los Oscars, los Globos de Oro, los Emmy, los Grammy o los Goya, cada año tiene lugar los Spike's Video Game Awards, que recompensan a los mejores títulos del año en categorías generales y específicas de cada sistema.
Este año parte como claro favorito el título de Bioware Mass Effect 2, el cual ha acumulado el mayor número de nominaciones. Le siguen en candidaturas Red Dead Redemption, Call of Duty: Black Ops y Halo: Reach. Estos cuatro títulos mencionados junto con God of War III se disputarán el codiciado galardón de "Juego del Año".
Durante la ceremonia, y junto al misterioso anuncio del nuevo título que Bioware realizará y que seguro que hasta el momento de su revelación llenará foros, websites y blogs por doquier con todo tipo de suposiciones, se producirá la premiere mundial de otro de los títulos más esperados del próximo 2011: Batman Arkham City, del cual de momento solo se ha publicado un breve teaser.
