La gala de los VGA se ha centrado fundamentalmente en la presentación de novedades como The Last of Us de Naughty Dog y Fortnite de Epic Games, pero no ha dejado al margen su cometido principal: entregar galardones a los mejores videojuegos del año.
El Juego del Año de esta edición es The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, que debe compartir cierto protagonismo con Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, elegido Mejor Shooter. Bethesda se ha transformado en el Estudio del Año. Como mejor juego de Xbox 360, el multiplataforma Batman Arkham City.
En Playstation 3, este galardón se lo ha llevado Uncharted 3 y en Wii The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. Bastion ha sido considerado Mejor Juego Independiente. Se han entregado galardones especiales a Blizzard en reconocimiento a su trayectoria y a la saga de Link.
